Gatwick Airport’s (LGW) plans for a second runway have seen a new challenge launched by campaign group Communities Against Gatwick Noise Emissions (CAGNE), which is arguing that development consent for the new runway was ‘flawed’.
The challenge concerns the assessment of potential greenhouse gas emissions as a result of the runway’s implementation, as well as what it states is a failure to recognise the potential for additional noise pollution near the airport.

The group is now urging transport secretary Heidi Alexander to revoke consent, threatening a judicial review challenge if action is not taken.
Thus far, the Department for Transport (DfT) has stated that it is unable to comment on the challenge, which was launched earlier this week.
The UK Government granted official approval for London Gatwick’s 2.2 billion GBP Northern Runway scheme in September.
The project, which has been under examination since 2021, involves repositioning the existing northern runway so that it can operate alongside the main runway for routine commercial flights.
