San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has commenced its 2.6 billion USD Terminal 3 West Modernization project.

This project will renovate and expand the existing terminal to improve the passenger experience and airport operations. The 650,000-square-foot western half of Terminal 3 will gain additional features including a seismic retrofit and an expanded security checkpoint.

SFO Airport Director Ivar C. Satero said:

We are excited to launch this renovation and expansion project for Terminal 3. Our goal is to create an extraordinary airport experience for our guests, leading the way in sustainability and innovation, and we expect this project will once again raise the bar for what travellers can look forward to at SFO.

The Terminal 3 West Modernization project will add 200,000 square feet of new space to the terminal, accommodating more food, beverage, and retail concessions.

The expanded section is expected to open in autumn 2027, providing travellers with an upgraded and spacious environment.

Significant elements of the project include:

A New Exterior Façade: A welcoming new exterior design will greet travellers curbside, enhancing the first impression for visitors to the San Francisco Bay Area.

Check-In and Security Enhancements: Expanded check-in areas will feature state-of-the-art self-bag drop facilities, and new security checkpoints, including one on the mezzanine level for AirTrain passengers.

Improved International Access: Arriving international passengers will benefit from direct access to the Customs Hall in the International Terminal via a new Federal Inspection Service (FIS) sterile connector.

New Six-Storey Building: This will house airline lounges and operational office spaces, with an expected opening in early 2028.

Renovated Check-In Lobby: The eastern end of Terminal 3 will feature a renovated check-in lobby, slated for completion in early 2029.

During the construction phase, a temporary walkway will be in place by the 2024 holiday season, allowing passengers to navigate between terminals and boarding areas around the project site.

The project is expected to employ 500-600 workers at its peak, with over 173 million USD in contracts targeted for Local Business Enterprises (LBE).

Mayor London Breed said:

For millions of people around the world, SFO creates their very first impression of the San Francisco Bay Area. We want our residents to be proud of their hometown Airport and for visitors to experience what makes our region great the moment they step off an airplane. This Terminal 3 West Modernization project is another major step that will ensure SFO continues to reflect the innovation, sustainability, and diversity that make San Francisco such an amazing place.

SFO is committed to achieving LEED Platinum certification for this project, incorporating numerous sustainability features such as daylight harvesting, displacement ventilation, on-site photovoltaic cells, and dynamic glazing. Additional environmental initiatives include waste heat recovery, low-carbon steel and concrete, energy-efficient baggage handling, recycled water usage, and the incorporation of health-friendly materials.

The Terminal 3 West Modernisation project is being led by the Turner Construction Company in collaboration with Gensler and TEF Design. The construction management team is comprised of WCME JV, PGH Wong Engineering, Consor Engineers, MCK Americas, and ECS Consultants.
