San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has outlined a series of operational changes coming to the airport during the next phase of the 2.6 billion USD Terminal 3 West Modernization project.

From Tuesday 4 November, the terminal’s AirTrain station, ticket counter and curbside location will see a number of changes.

Changes will include the closure of Terminal 3’s AirTrain station, which will remain in place until the new facility opens in 2027, with the existing Terminal 2 AirTrain station set to be renamed to Terminals 2 & 3 AirTrain Station. All United Airlines passengers either arriving or departing on AirTrain must use this newly combined station.

United Airlines ticket counters at the Terminal’s west end will close, with United Counters at the east end remaining open. United will then open new ticket counters at the west side of Terminal 2, with passengers checking in for flights departing from D & E gates urged to use the Terminal 2 counters, and those checking in for flights departing from F gates instructed to use the Terminal 3 counters.

Terminal 3’s departure level curb is also set to close from Doors 6 through 13 until 2027, with passengers now instructed to be dropped off in Terminal 2 or the Terminal 3 arrival level.

SFO’s Terminal 3 West Modernization project will a the renovation of the existing 650,000 square foot western half of Terminal 3, including an extensive retrofit, the installation of an expanded security checkpoint and all-new passenger amenities.

The project will also create 200,000 square feet of additional space for expanded food, beverage and retail concessions.

The expanded section is expected to open in 2027, with the Terminal’s renovated and expanded western half is expected to open in fall 2027. Additionally, a new six-story building, which will house both airline lounges and operational office space, will open in early 2028, with a renovated check-in lobby on the eastern end of Terminal 3 is expected to open in early 2029.
