San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has announced a closure of Runway 1 Right for six months of 2026.
The closure will allow for the repaving of the runway surface, as well as improvements for the adjacent taxiway.

The closure will begin on 30 March 2026 and end on 02 October 2026, during which time SFO will operate all arrivals and departures on runways 28 Left and 28 Right – a common configuration used during clear windy days.
The runway parallel to the construction area, 1 Left, will not be used for takeoffs and landings but instead will serve as an additional taxiway to reduce ground congestion.
As a result of the closure; SFO expects less than 10% of flights to be delayed, with most expected to average less than 30 minutes and occur during peak periods between 09:00 and 20:00 to 21:00.
Some communities will experience a temporary increase in departing air traffic overhead due to flights utilising runways 28 Left and 28 Right for takeoff.
Total cost for the construction is expected to be 180 million USD; of which 92.1 million USD will be funded by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The Granite Construction Company was awarded a contract to carry out the work on 06 May 2025.
