Smiths Detection has completed a significant checkpoint upgrade at Malta International Airport (MLA).

The upgrade consists of the enhancement of security screening, expansion of passenger throughput and support of compliance with new EU regulations regarding cabin baggage screening.

Smiths Detection installed six HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX Model-S scanners and six Cassioli Fast2Check lanes to replace the airport’s existing X-ray checkpoint lanes, allowing passengers to leave electronics and liquids within their bags.

Having been awarded the contract following a procurement process; Smiths Detection continues its long-term partnership with MLA, where the company has provided checkpoint and explosive trace detection systems for more than 20 years.

Patrick Murgo, Senior VP - Safety & Security, Smiths Detection, said:

This upgrade reflects our commitment to helping airports address operational pressures while planning for long-term expansion.

With space constraints and rising passenger volumes, Malta needed a smart, future-ready checkpoint – and we’re proud to help make that happen.
