Swissport International has officially launched operations at the Digital & Intelligent International Cargo Terminal at Shanghai Pudong International Airport – the world’s second largest air freight hub.
The launch marks Swissport’s first foray into the Chinese market and forms part of the company’s wider Asian growth strategy, as well as aims to support China’s rapidly expanding cross-border e-commerce sector.

Following the formation of a new partnership with Smarex in 2025 (a joint venture between AVINEX Logistics and China Eastern Airlines Logistics); the two the companies are combining Swissport’s global cargo expertise with Smarex’s advanced digital infrastructure to create a next-generation air cargo operation.
By connecting Shanghai Pudong to Swissport’s network of 312 airports in 49 countries, the new operation strengthens trade links between China and major global cargo hubs. The integrated network is expected to improve efficiency, reliability, and delivery times, helping Chinese businesses reach international markets more quickly.
The 144,000-square-metre facility is designed to handle growing e-commerce volumes through a series of automated sorting systems, streamlined customs processes, and an advanced cold-chain infrastructure.
The facility’s 15,000 square metres of temperature-controlled storage will support the handling of both pharmaceutical and perishable cargo with continuous monitoring and strict handling standards.
The terminal uses AI-enabled systems, automation, and real-time digital monitoring to optimise cargo flows and operational decision-making.
Fully electrified and designed for scalability, the Terminal will serve as a model for future smart cargo terminals whilst supporting Swissport’s goals for innovation, sustainability, and global connectivity.
