Tampa International Airport (TPA) has published an update on the progress of its highly anticipated Airside D project – with major enabling work to transform the building’s future home now underway.

The new airside terminal, which will be TPA’s first new Airside terminal in almost 20 years, is being built on an area previously used for overnight parking for aircraft (known as Hardstand D).

Construction is progressing steadily on Tampa International Airport’s highly anticipated Airside D project

Fencing now separates the site from the secured TPA airfield, which aims to provide workers with easier access to the construction zone.

Crews have now built an 11-acre contractor complex at Hoover Boulevard, including eight trailers and a 410-space parking lot – with room to expand as the project progresses.

Workers will now report to the complex and travel toward the worksite vi a road that connects the office trailers and parking lot to the construction site.

The summer period saw crews make way for the foundations of the new building, with the installation of an under-drainage system now underway, with building foundation work expected to begin in early November.

A 92 million USD supplemental contract was also approved earlier this month by the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority Board that includes funding for structural steel, metal decking and precast concrete components.

Spanning approximately 600,000 square feet; Airside D will stand as the largest Airside building at TPA once constructed. Preliminary costs have been valued at 1.5 billion USD, with construction set to be completed in late 2028 and a final design for the project expected from the design-build team imminently.

Design for the project is being led by construction company Hensel Phelps, with Architecture and Engineering company HNTB Corporation, in association with Gensler.

The new facility is being built to the northwest of TPA’s Main Terminal, and will form the centrepiece of Phase 3 of TPA’s Master Plan – a blueprint for how the Airport will deal with projected traveller growth.
