Tampa International Airport (TPA) has unveiled the final design for Airside D, its first new Airside terminal in nearly two decades. The 16-gate terminal is planned as a combined international and domestic gateway and is expected to open in 2029.

The Hillsborough County Aviation Authority Board of Directors approved the design during a meeting on Thursday, alongside a 902 million USD supplemental contract for the project. The total cost of Airside D is estimated at 1.528 billion USD, with construction scheduled to rise vertically later this year and continue through to late 2028.

Airside D will span 600,000 square feet, making it the largest Airside terminal at TPA. The design emphasises open spaces, natural light and a range of amenities intended to enhance the passenger experience. These include a dedicated children’s play area, a quiet room, additional power outlets, and significant greenery throughout the terminal.

The terminal’s interior and exterior designs incorporate feedback gathered from public listening sessions held last summer across Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Pasco counties. The sessions invited community members and travellers to provide input on features they would like to see.

Airport CEO Michael Stephens said:

Airside D is more than a new terminal; it is a bold vision for the future of travel in Tampa Bay. Thanks to the dedication and collaboration of our TPA team and partners, we’re setting a new standard for innovation, service, and hospitality in our region. Once complete, Airside D will serve as Tampa Bay’s international gateway, welcoming the world with the world-class experience our guests expect from TPA.

Key features of the new terminal include:

  • Modern TSA security screening and ground-level international inspection facilities
  • Glass boarding bridges with views of the airfield
  • A mezzanine level with a Delta Sky Club and a common-use lounge
  • Dynamic media installations and interactive displays
  • Centralised shopping and dining areas with 360-degree gate views
  • Cutting-edge shuttle systems consistent with other Airsides

The design also honours former Airport CEO Joe Lopano, who retired last April. A quote from Lopano will be displayed to welcome passengers, recognising his contributions to the airport.

The project is led by Hensel Phelps as the construction company, with HNTB Corporation and Gensler providing architecture and engineering services.

TPA Chief Development Officer Smitha Radhakrishnan said:

From the beginning, the guiding principle behind Airside D has been a singular focus on delivering the very best amenities and travel experience to the millions of passengers who visit TPA each year. Thoughtful and functional design, leading-edge technology, unmatched convenience and a sense of calm all come together in a facility shaped not just by expertise, but by the collective vision of our entire community.

In addition to Airside D, the Board approved a design-builder for the Main Terminal Ticketing Level expansion. The upgrade will add 28 counters, relocate airline offices, and improve passenger circulation. Completion is scheduled for 2029.

TPA has also launched a Call for Artists for eight new public art commissions across the airport, including six in Airside D. Applications are open until 19 March.

Construction work on Airside D began in December 2024, with site preparation, foundation work, and recycled concrete removal already underway. Structural steel framing is expected to begin this summer.
