Work has begun on a brand new terminal at San Antonio International Airport (SAT), which looks to incorporate both SAT and the San Antonio region’s rapid expansion with a higher passenger capacity throughout.
The new terminal is set to feature a modern design with enhanced accessibility, improved passenger amenities, new technology, up to 17 gates, over 800,000 square feet of terminal space, 35,700 square feet of concession space and 29,000 square feet of club lounge space.
Ground was broken on the new terminal on December 10 2024 and forms part of the airport’s Terminal Development Program (TDP), which aims to guide all future development of SAT’s airfield, terminal facilities, ground access and support infrastructure over the course of the next 20 years.
The TDP is also part of Elevate/SAT, a 2.5 billion USD expansion and capital improvements plan looking to improve the airport, the overall customer experience and the region as a whole.
Jesus Saenz, IAP, Director of Airports, saidThis groundbreaking is more than just the start of a construction project.
It is the beginning of a new chapter for our airport and our community. As SAT continues to experience record-breaking growth each month, this new terminal will ensure we meet the needs of passengers, businesses and partners from San Antonio and around the world.
Construction on the new terminal, which is anticipated to generate more than 16,000 new jobs, is expected to conclude in 2028, with design plans previously unveiled in February 2023.
City Manager Erik Walsh, said:This project is a significant economic driver for our region.
Its development will create thousands of jobs, stimulate local businesses and bring long-term employment opportunities. Beyond the immediate economic benefits, it will lay the foundation for sustained growth, making our region a destination for innovation, investment and prosperity.
