Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) has opened its new Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Checkpoint 2 security area.
The checkpoint became fully operational on Wednesday, 26 March. Checkpoint A is now set to close permanently later this week.
The opening marks the completion of CLT’s transition from five lettered checkpoints to three numbered ones, increasing efficiency while expanding overall screening capacity. The additional lanes are expected to facilitate screening for an extra 600 passengers per hour. All airport concourses and gates remain accessible from any security checkpoint.

Located centrally within the Terminal Lobby, Checkpoint 2 will serve as the primary screening area for TSA PreCheck® passengers and flight crews. Employee lanes will continue to be available at all three checkpoints.
Jack Christine, Chief Infrastructure Officer at CLT said:The opening of Checkpoint 2 is a major milestone in the Terminal Lobby Expansion project, as streamlining security checkpoints from five to three while increasing capacity will provide passengers with a faster, more efficient screening experience.
Further enhancements to the Terminal Lobby are ongoing. These include the installation of three additional Automated Exit Lanes in the Ticketing area and the introduction of two new baggage carousels in Baggage Claim. Once completed, the airport will feature eight high-capacity baggage devices designed to improve efficiency.
The TLE project, scheduled for completion later in the year, is modernising the terminal originally constructed in 1982 to accommodate 2.8 million annual passengers. By 2024, CLT recorded 58.8 million travellers, with 18 million using the Terminal Lobby for arrivals and departures.
