The UK government has announced new funding to support the development of smart airport security technology, aiming to enhance safety measures and streamline passenger screening processes.
The initiative, led by the Department for Transport (DfT), will distribute 450,000 GBP among six British technology firms. The funding is being granted through the HADeS (High Assurance Detection Systems) project.
The funding will be used to develop advanced scanning equipment designed to improve threat detection while minimising false alarms and the need for manual checks. This is expected to expedite security procedures and reduce delays for travellers.
Companies based in locations including Tewkesbury, Cambridge, and Nottingham will contribute to the initiative.

The programme aligns with the government’s broader Plan for Change, which aims to drive investment in the aviation sector, support job creation, and stimulate economic growth.
Aviation Minister Mike Kane said:Safety is our top priority and this funding will strengthen the UK’s already rigorous security standards, bolster our competitiveness internationally and ensure that passengers can continue to fly with ease of mind.
As part of our Plan for Change, we are turbocharging investment in the aviation sector and going further and faster with expansion plans to kickstart economic growth and deliver high-skilled jobs across the country.
The UK aviation and aerospace sector is valued at 20 billion GBP, and ongoing investment is expected to reinforce its long-term stability.
Alongside financial support, the initiative includes business development workshops delivered in partnership with Connected Places Catapult. These sessions will offer guidance on areas such as regulation, corporate finance, trial design, and customer needs.
Erika Lewis, Chief Executive Officer of Connected Places Catapult said:Making transport efficient, inclusive and safe is a key priority for Connected Places Catapult. By supporting innovators with ideas to further strengthen security at airports, not only are we helping to improve the passenger experience, but we are also supporting companies to develop and scale here in the UK.
The funding forms part of the government’s broader efforts to modernise transport infrastructure while ensuring safety and efficiency for travellers. With continued investment, the UK aims to remain at the forefront of aviation security and technological innovation.
Sam Pollock, Director at Iconal, one of the recipient companies said:DfT’s HADeS innovation grant funding is a great example of government working with SMEs such as ourselves to accelerate the development of cutting edge technologies, supporting the UK’s world class aviation security industry.
