The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has advised passengers to prepare accordingly as the sector anticipates a record three million passengers will fly from UK airports in the week before Christmas.

Newly released data has shown that Friday 19 December is set to be the busiest day for travel, with roughly 460,000 people expected to take flight.

Christmas Day flights have also increased in popularity, with 160,000 passengers due to fly – an increase of 13% on last year and 72% on numbers in 2015.

The CAA has issued an advisory to remind those travelling to check what they are packing in order to keep journeys running smoothly and avoid unnecessary delays.

The regulator has advised prospective passengers to:

  • Carry essential electronics like mobile phones, laptops and vapes in hand luggage
  • Leave presents unwrapped, as they may need to be inspected at security
  • Check airline rules before packing items such as Christmas crackers
  • Ensure any electrical devices packed in checked luggage are completely switched off

The CAA has also issued a reminder that party poppers are not allowed on any UK aircraft.

Selina Chadha, Director of Consumer & Markets at the UK Civil Aviation Authority, said:

Millions of people will be travelling to spend Christmas with loved ones this year, and a little preparation goes a long way.

By taking a moment to check what you pack and plan your journey in advance, you can help keep yourself safe. This festive season, remember: pack safe, fly safe.

Passengers have also been reminded to check their routes to the airport, know their baggage limits and to arrive in good time, particularly if travelling with children or additional winter items.

Those travelling should also, according to the CAA, be aware of their rights when travel plans go wrong. If a flight is delayed or cancelled, airlines are required to support passengers, and will have to provide both food and drink during extended delays, cover accommodation if passengers are delayed overnight and offer a refund or alternative travel if a flight is cancelled.
