Work is shortly set to begin on the installation of a brand-new radar system at Jersey Airport, which will aim to ensure that Jersey’s surveillance infrastructure remains supportable, reliable and fit for future operations.
The installation forms part of the Port of Jersey’s ongoing programme of investment and renewal in critical airport and airspace infrastructure – which is in turn part of a wider programme to maintain and modernise elements of the surveillance infrastructure supporting air traffic services across the Channel Islands.
Keith Attwood, Head of Airport Operations at Jersey Airport, said:Air traffic services across the Channel Islands are supported by a resilient network of radar systems, which comprise of radar sites in Jersey and complementary infrastructure in Guernsey. The radar at Jersey Airport is the most visible part of that network, and this project will replace the existing airfield system to strengthen Jersey’s surveillance capability.
We are pleased to have reached this stage of the project and to see installation work begin, with completion expected by summer 2027.
Jersey Airport recently reported a passenger increase of 4.5% in July when compared to the same time last year, as well as a 1.9% increase in the total number of passengers during Q2 year-on-year.
In January, the airport reported a 4% increase in passenger traffic when compared to the previous year and, in the same month, work to transform the Departure Lounge at Jersey Airport entered its most significant stage, with passengers advised of temporary changes to their journey through the terminal building.
In 2024, the airport handled roughly 1.47 million passengers, and, more recently, increased the frequency of its KLM services to Amsterdam from weekly to daily.
