Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) has introduced a series of Innovia 300R vehicles to its Automated People Mover (APM) system, which is nicknamed the Plane Train.

The Plane Train first began operations with 17 Innovia CX100 vehicles in 1980, and has expanded to its current fleet size of 59 cars over the course of the last 45 years.

The new vehicles are set to be added to the fleet by the end of March 2026, bringing the total number of vehicles in operation to 73 and increasing overall passenger transport capacity from 10,000 to 12,000 per hour in each direction, with wait times between trains set to shorten from 108 seconds to 90.

Each of the Innovia 300R models are designed for both driverless & manual operation, with ATL stating an intention to replace its current CX100 fleet in its entirety with the new 300R units.

Ana Maria Taroco, ATL’s Assistant General Manager for Planning and Development, said:

We’re proud to usher in a new era of transit innovation at ATL.

These new vehicles are not only energy-efficient and sustainable, but they are also a testament to our dedication to meeting and exceeding the evolving needs of our passengers and the aviation industry.
