Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) has announced the approval of a major infrastructure upgrade focused on the enhancement of wireless services at the airport.

Approved by the Atlanta City Council on Monday 19 May, the upgrade will see the installation of a new Distributed Antenna System (DAS).

Busiest Airports
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) remains the world’s busiest airport according to ACI

The new system, which is scheduled for completion in January 2026, will provide the airport with both significantly improved cellular coverage and speed and has been designed to eliminate both dead zones and weaker signal areas.

ATL General Manager Ricky Smith, said:

As the world’s busiest and most efficient airport, we are committed to delivering a world-class travel experience in every dimension — including connectivity.

This DAS upgrade is a critical step in future-proofing our facility and meeting the digital expectations of our guests.

Supporting new wireless technologies, the DAS will allow the airport to transition from its 4G infrastructure to a new 5G offering. The system is designed as a ‘neutral host’, which allows for the distribution of any future carrier’s signal, leaving the door open for other industry partnerships going forward.

The project is set to upgrade radio signal distribution utilised by public safety personnel, as well as passenger infrastructure, offering a scalable, maintainable system.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, said:

Investing in innovative infrastructure like the new DAS is how we maintain ATL’s reputation as a global force to be reckoned with.

As the gateway to our city and the world, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport must meet and exceed the digital demands of today’s travelers and tomorrow’s innovations. This upgrade ensures our airport remains a global leader in connectivity, safety, and the overall passenger experience.
