Construction work has begun on a 470 million USD expansion at William P. Hobby Airport (HOU).

Aiming to improve passenger experience and increase overall passenger capacity, work began in December 2024.

Houston Airports has stated that passengers need not be concerned about any potential open ceilings in the baggage area

The expansion will see seven new gates added for both domestic and international flights, baggage claim areas enhanced with new, natural light sources, an additional two baggage carousels and new baggage handling system, a new overheard canopy connecting to the Departures Curb and more space for restaurants, retail and public art installations.

Construction is set to be completed in Summer 2027, with both Houston Airports and Southwest Airlines apologising for any potential works that may affect passenger journeys.

Jim Szczesniak, Director of Aviation for Houston Airports, said:

As Houston's gateway to the world, Hobby Airport is raising the bar for passengers.

This project is about more than aesthetics. It's about creating a seamless and enjoyable experience from the moment passengers step off their plane to when they leave the airport.
