Kansai International Airport’s Terminal 1 in Osaka, Japan, has been named among the 2025 Prix Versailles “World’s Most Beautiful Airports,” following a major redevelopment led by architecture and design firm Populous.
Originally designed 30 years ago by Renzo Piano, Kansai International Airport is built on an artificial island in Osaka Bay and is known for its aerodynamic roofline and status as the world’s longest airport terminal.

The latest project focused on securing the site’s long-term growth while making the best possible use of its existing infrastructure. As part of this transformation, Terminal 1’s capacity to accommodate international travellers has been expanded by 25% within a newly reimagined, functional, and visually striking environment.
All interior spaces have been redesigned with natural materials, creating a distinctly Japanese atmosphere. This reconfiguration is accompanied by the introduction of a smart queue management system, delivering a more seamless experience for passengers.

Reopened in time for the 2025 World Expo, Terminal 1’s revitalisation celebrates both the history and future of the airport.
