Portland International Airport’s Main Terminal has been named among the 2025 Prix Versailles “World’s Most Beautiful Airports,” following a redevelopment designed by architecture firm ZGF.
Inspired by Oregon’s forested landscapes, the project delivers a calming, immersive experience for travellers. The centrepiece is an undulating mass timber roof spanning over 36,000 m², celebrating the region’s long-standing connection to forest product innovation.
The timber materials were sourced entirely from local industry within a 500-kilometre radius of the site. A dedicated “forest to frame” system was established to track as much of the wood as possible back to its forest of origin, reinforcing the project’s strong sustainability credentials.

Designed to promote access to natural light and views of the surrounding landscape, the terminal also incorporates a variety of biophilic elements. Its interiors are arranged as a series of rooms that reference Portland’s urban fabric, creating a layout that feels both intuitive and welcoming.

Reopened as part of Portland International Airport’s long-term development plan, the new Main Terminal is an example of sustainable, functional design, blending local identity with global ambitions.
