Roland Garros Airport’s Arrivals Terminal on Réunion Island has been named among the 2025 Prix Versailles “World’s Most Beautiful Airports,” following the delivery of a 13,000 m² bioclimatic extension designed by AIA Life Designers.
Billed as the world’s first tropical bioclimatic airport terminal at this scale, the new Arrivals Terminal was developed in close collaboration with local industry, with 91% of the work was carried out by businesses based on the island.

A key feature is its central ‘canyon,’ which defines the terminal’s form and function. Acting as a thermal chimney, this open-air void promotes natural ventilation, complemented by 830 louvred shutters along the façades that automatically adjust in real time to Réunion’s dynamic trade winds.
Wooden structures and native vegetation shape the interior, offering travellers a sensory experience rooted in the island’s landscape and cultural identity.

With its focus on environmental responsiveness, material authenticity, and community engagement, the terminal embodies a new model for sustainable airport design in tropical climates.
