Zurich Airport Selects Timber Design for New Terminal

Flughafen Zürich AG has selected ‘Raumfachwerk’ as the winning design for the new Dock A terminal building at Zurich Airport, which will be built using sustainable wood.

The winning project was submitted by a planning team formed of BIG, HOK and 10:8 Architekten, led by architect Bjarke Ingels. The new building will be constructed over the next 10 years and is anticipated to be the largest airport dock built primarily of wood.

Of ten projects submitted, the eleven-member jury chaired by Basel-based architect Harry Gugger, was most impressed by the “Raumfachwerk” project
Andreas Schmid, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Flughafen Zürich AG said:

“The ‘Raumfachwerk’ project was the most impressive, in particular in terms of sustainability, operations and the economic aspects, but also as regards urban planning and the architecture.”

The new Dock A will be built largely from sustainable wood on the passenger levels, which is unique for a terminal building of its size. Photovoltaic panels will cover the building’s roof and dock base to provide around two thirds of the terminal’s annual electricity requirement. The new building will therefore advance Flughafen Zürich AG’s CO2 reduction strategy.

The investment in the new Dock A, including the new tower and dock base, is estimated to be around 700 million CHF
Bjarke Ingels, architect, founder and director of BIG said:

“For Zurich Airport's new Dock A, we tried to meet the complex global challenge of Co2 reduction with the simplest possible solution: A space framework made of solid timber that is structure, spatial experience, architectural design and organizing principle all in one. The simple yet expressive design – rooted in tradition and committed to innovation - embodies the cultural and natural elements of Swiss architecture.”

After over 35 years of operation, Zurich Airport’s current Dock A terminal has reached the end of its useful life and needs to be replaced. The older building will remain operational during construction and will then be demolished once the new facility is operational.

The new Dock A will provide passengers with a clear view of the apron and spacious waiting areas at the gates

Construction of the new Dock A is set to start in 2030 and has an estimated cost of 700 million CHF.
