Major infrastructure company AECOM has won a multi-million pound (GBP) contact with London Heathrow Airport to be the lead designer for the Future Terminal 2 (T2) Programme. During the eight-year contract, AECOM will provide design and project management services for a new baggage handling system and for infrastructure to support the anticipated increase in passenger numbers at T2.
As lead designer, AECOM will lead and integrate the design of all aspects of the project. These include the demolition of Terminal 1 and building new infrastructure for a permanent T2 baggage system. AECOM has worked with Heathrow Airport on the Future T2 Programme for the past year. This new contract significantly increases the scope of its role.
The contract takes a Project 13 alliancing approach. This means Heathrow and AECOM will work together throughout the contract period. AECOM will be the integrator bringing in the right suppliers and partners when and where they add the best value.
Richard Gammon, Managing Director of Aviation in EMEA, AECOM, said:The programme’s delivery model enables AECOM and Heathrow to build one collaborative team focused on finding the best and most innovative solutions for this multifaceted programme.
We bring global expertise in the delivery of aviation projects at some of the world’s biggest and most complex airports, working behind the scenes to help improve passenger experiences.
Heathrow Airport opened Terminal 2 in 2014. It is currently supported by the baggage system of Terminal 1, which is now closed. The Future T2 Programme will give the airport a new integrated system within the existing T2 site, enabling timely and efficient baggage handling. This will both increase passenger satisfaction and build capacity for future growth.
