Brisbane Airport has revealed designs for its major revamp of the International Terminal, part of a 5 billion AUD Future BNE transformation project.
This project marks the first significant upgrade since the terminal opened 29 years ago, aiming to improve passenger experience and meet new security standards.
Brisbane Airport CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff said:Our International Terminal is Queensland’s gateway to the world. After three decades of service, it’s well and truly time for a transformation, ensuring it’s ready to welcome the world for years to come. This building is worth billions of dollars to Queensland’s tourism economy and jobs every year.
The transformation, which includes a range of new features and sustainable initiatives, is expected to conclude by 2027.
Relocation and Upgraded Security Screening
Security Screening and Passport Control will move from Level 3 to the brighter, naturally-lit atrium on Level 4, creating a more welcoming space.
The terminal will also introduce advanced Computed Tomography (CT) security screening equipment, allowing passengers to leave items like laptops in their bags. This new system will reduce queue times and increase screening accuracy.
Gert-Jan de Graaff added:Travellers will enjoy less hassle with the new screening system, by keeping laptops and other electronic items in their bags. It’s faster, smoother, and provides more accurate screening.
The same technology is being installed in BNE’s Domestic Terminal and is part of the largest airport deployment of Rapiscan Systems in South-East Asia.
Self-Service Check-In and Baggage Upgrades
The terminal will feature new self-service check-in kiosks and bag drop options powered by Amadeus technology, aiming to reduce wait times and offer a smoother experience.
Advanced baggage systems, including energy-efficient conveyors and enhanced screening equipment, will improve efficiency and security.
Expanded Retail and Duty-Free Areas
As part of a renewed 10-year partnership with Lotte Duty Free, the duty-free area will nearly double in size, showcasing both global brands and local Queensland products.
The retail transformation will include 31 premier retail options, offering a refreshed shopping experience for travelers.
Sustainability and Historic Design Features
The transformation incorporates sustainable features, such as electric charging stations for ground support vehicles, converting these from fossil fuels to more eco-friendly power sources.
In addition, Brisbane tuff, a volcanic rock originally quarried from the Kangaroo Point Cliffs, will be repurposed as terrazzo benchtops and furniture in the terminal, paying homage to Brisbane’s architectural history.
Future Plans: Terminal 3
In addition to the International Terminal upgrades, Brisbane Airport is planning a new Terminal 3, which will eventually integrate domestic and international passengers.
Located between the airport’s parallel runways, this new facility will further enhance Brisbane’s capacity to handle increasing passenger numbers, which reached 5.6 million in FY24, up 39% from the previous year.
