In the summer of 2022, Farnborough Airport initiated a £55m investment program to enhance its facilities and infrastructure.
The development included a new 300m long, four bay hangar facility, boosting the Airport’s hangar capacity by more than 70%.
Known as Domus III and designed by aviation specialist architects, Gebler Tooth, the state of the art 175,000 sq ft hangar facility set a new standard in sustainability with its modern and forward-thinking design.
The main contractor, McLaughlin & Harvey Construction Ltd, awarded Jewers Doors the contract to supply, deliver, install, test and commission four sets of Esavian hangar doors for this esteemed project.
The new doors comprise of four sets of Esavian 126-SBR automated steel sliding doors, each to suit a clear opening of 73,500 mm wide by 10,600 mm high. Each door is in four equal width door leaves, approx. 18,500 mm wide, travelling on a four-track system. All four leaves move independently of one another within the opening, allowing up to 75% of the opening to be clear and available to ease aircraft manoeuvrability and reduce emissions associated with aircraft handling.
To optimise the level of natural light inside the hangar, the architects specified ‘Marlon Clickfix 1040-VF translucent polycarbonate cladding system from Brett Martin to integrate with Esavian door frames. In conjunction with the hangars’ intelligent artificial lighting system that adapts to natural light levels, a rainwater harvesting system, eco-friendly heating, and a fully integrated building control and energy monitoring system, this facility can achieve exceptionally high energy efficiency.
