The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has awarded 481 million USD in grants for airport infrastructure projects across the country, with funding going towards runway, taxiway, terminal and apron improvements.
The investment, announced by US Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy on 3 September, comprises 191 grants covering airports in 36 states and two US territories. The funding is being provided through the FAA’s Airport Infrastructure Grants (AIG) programme.
The announcement comes ahead of the Labor Day weekend, traditionally one of the busier periods for air travel in the US.
The largest allocation is 100 million USD for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Georgia. The funding will support runway, taxiway and terminal reconstruction, as well as improvements to runway safety areas.
Other major awards include 32.5 million USD for the reconstruction of the terminal at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport in Kentucky and 30.3 million USD towards terminal construction at San Diego International Airport in California.
Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport in Wisconsin is receiving 14.2 million USD for taxiway construction and rehabilitation, while El Paso International Airport in Texas has been awarded 8.7 million USD for apron rehabilitation.
A further 2.5 million USD will support infrastructure projects at general aviation airports in Wisconsin. These projects include terminal reconstruction, runway and taxiway rehabilitation, and reconstruction of a building used for snow-removal equipment.
The FAA’s AIG programme can fund a range of airport infrastructure projects, including airport planning and development, terminal improvements, baggage system upgrades, runway and taxiway rehabilitation, and improvements to airport roads and access routes.
