Farnborough Airport has appointed McLaughlin & Harvey and Gebler Tooth to design and construct its new 55 million GBP hangar development, Domus III.

The 175,000 square-foot facility has been sustainably designed in response to the growing demand for premium hangar space for business jets. To meet this demand, the new construction will increase Farnborough Airport’s hangar space by over 70 percent.

Domus III will be fitted with translucent automated doors, which will stretch the entire length of the building to optimise natural light inside the hangar and improve aircraft manoeuvrability. This will also help to mitigate unnecessary emissions from aircraft handling activities.

Construction will commence in August 2022, with completion scheduled for early 2024.

Simon Geere, Farnborough Airport’s CEO said:

We are pleased to announce that we have appointed McLaughlin & Harvey and Gebler Tooth on the development of Domus III, which will further enhance our facilities and operational infrastructure. We want to be known as a global showcase for airport sustainability and the new hangar has been meticulously designed with this in mind. The investment will also provide a substantial boost for employment and economic growth in the region, whilst continuing our journey in providing the very best-in-class facilities to our customers at Europe’s number one business aviation airport.

Farnborough Airport is Europe’s leading business airport and the home of British aviation. The new hangar is part of  the airport’s wider plan to improve the customer experience and set sustainability standards for the sector.

In 2018, Farnborough Airport was the first business airport to be awarded carbon neutral status. Following this success, the airport launched a Net Zero roadmap in June 2022, setting a pathway to Net Zero for its controllable emissions by 2030.

The airport also now offers Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and ran a successful trial in July 2022 offering SAF at the same price as Jet A1 fuel.
