Honduras Addresses Air Traffic Growth with FREQUENTIS Advanced Surveillance Solution

  • The Government of Honduras, through the Spanish Cooperation, presents the Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) solution, Quadrant, by Frequentis Comsoft
  • This is to handle the upcoming growth in air traffic and runway capacity at Palmerola International Airport in Comayagua

Surveillance Solution

The Central America Flight Information Region (FIR) covers over 2.6 million square kilometers and is one of the largest in the Central America and Caribbean (CAR) region. COCESNA is an organisation in charge of providing air navigation services for its member states in Central America (Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua). The solution for Palmerola International Airport, implemented with Spanish integrator DEIMOS, includes a redundant turnkey Quadrant station at the airport. As a highly flexible solution, Quadrant can easily and quickly scale up and down to meet requirements, from a single remote ADS-B deployment to nationwide wide area multilateration (WAM).

The flagship airport, inaugurated in December 2021, is located near Comayagua in central Honduras – 75 kilometers from the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa. The international airport is designed for 1.5 million passengers per year and the planned cargo facility will greatly benefit the country.

Gerardo Rivera, Executive Director of the Honduran Civil Aeronautics Agency, says:

“The new airport project is one of the main initiatives taken by the Government for more efficient airspace and infrastructure development. With Quadrant, we are pleased that Frequentis Comsoft is supporting the operational safety of Honduran aviation to achieve these ambitious goals.”

Airports and ANSPs are looking for new surveillance solutions that outperform traditional systems for air and ground traffic. Quadrant is a forward-thinking solution for ADS-B and Multilateration (MLAT) in a single ground station platform. Frequentis Comsoft’s Quadrant uses advanced MLAT algorithms to provide 3D position measurements and offers cost-effective, lightweight ADS-B sensors as an important surveillance source for aviation operations.

Constantin von Reden, Managing Director at Frequentis Comsoft and Member of the ATM Executive Board, says:

“We are proud to count COCESNA, the Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP) for Honduras, now among our customers, and to be part of this new modern, safe, and future-oriented airport. At the same time, the project is the start of a successful partnership with integrator DEIMOS and paves the way for future cooperation.”
