Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) has begun preparations for the construction of a third terminal following projections of a record 17 million passengers served by the end of 2024.
The construction of Terminal 3 is expected to enable the airport to grow its service numbers by at least an additional 3 million passengers by the end of 2030, solidifying plans to offer new long-haul flights in the near future.
Developed and designed with sustainability targets in mind, initial works related to the new terminal will include earth backfill required for the new apron, an extension of which will allow for up to 12 aircraft to be handled simultaneously.
Francois Berisot, the CEO of Budapest Airport, said:Based on the results so far, we can already see that we will handle a record number of passengers at the airport by the end of this year, which is not surprising, as Budapest and Hungary are becoming increasingly popular worldwide and more and more tourists are arriving every year.
Significant developments are needed to serve the increasing passenger traffic with high quality. The design of Terminal 3 and some related construction works are already underway, and execution could start soon. The goals are ambitious; to serve more and more passengers, with high quality and continuously expanding infrastructure.
Work on the new terminal is expected to be completed within the next eight years, aiding Budapest Airport in its goal of reaching zero-emission operations by 2030.
