Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) has achieved a new milestone with the topping out of the Midfield Satellite Concourse (MSC) South at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), just seven months after groundbreaking.
MSC South will be an extension of the West Gates at Tom Bradley International Terminal. To construct this facility, the airport is using an Offsite Construction and Relocation (OCR) technique. This approach involves building the concourse in nine segments offsite, and then assembling them on-site to optimise efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
During the Topping Out event, held at MSC South’s Offsite Construction yard, attendees witnessed the completion of the structural frames of the segments, showcasing the success of the OCR technique.
Councilwoman Traci Park, Council District 11 said:Residents of Los Angeles and visitors to our amazing city are already experiencing the ongoing modernisation at LAX, and with its swift project timeline and distinctive construction approach, they can expect to enjoy all of the benefits of MSC South next year. As MSC South approaches its final stages of construction, this homage to Los Angeles' iconic modernist legacy is set to become a source of pride for every visitor to the site.
MSC South has been designed to reflect the City of Los Angeles, with strong influence from notable modernist homes. For example, the project’s exterior brise soleil system frames sightlines of the surrounding landscape.
This shade system also enables passive cooling and energy conservation, helping the project achieve its LEED Silver certification goal.
Significant project completion on this facility is planned for 2025.
