Drone Incidents Are Already Happening
One of the most striking insights came directly from the audience. When asked whether they had dealt with a drone intrusion during the past 12 months:
- 62.5% had experienced drone intrusions multiple times
- 37.5% had not experienced a known drone intrusion
- No respondents indicated they had experienced only one incident or were unsure
While the sample size was limited, the results clearly indicate that drone activity around critical infrastructure is not a theoretical concern. For many organisations, it is an operational reality that requires ongoing monitoring and risk management.
The Impact Goes Beyond Security
We also asked participants about the biggest potential impact of a drone incident at their facility. The responses revealed concerns across multiple domains:
- 40% identified operational disruption as the primary risk
- 20% cited security impacts
- 20% pointed to financial consequences
- 20% were unsure which impact would be most significant
These results highlight an important reality: drone incidents can affect organisations in different ways depending on their environment and mission. A single unauthorised drone can disrupt operations, trigger security procedures, create financial consequences, or contribute to broader resilience challenges.
