Work on the next stage of Melbourne Airport Rail is set to begin, with site investigations, procurement and development activities due to start in the coming weeks.
Stage 2 will build a 7.4-kilometre rail line between Albion and Keilor East, including a new station at Keilor East. The station will have a bus interchange and car park, and is expected to serve around 5,200 passengers a day once the airport rail link is complete.
The project will also include 1.1 kilometres of elevated railway near Albion and a new bridge over the Maribyrnong River. High-capacity signalling will support frequent airport services.
Community engagement is planned for 2027, with major construction due to begin in 2028. The line to Keilor East is expected to open in 2031.
Stage 2 will be delivered alongside Stage 1, which is already under construction and is due to finish in 2030. This includes upgrading 6 kilometres of track between West Footscray and Albion and rebuilding Sunshine Station with six platforms to accommodate future airport services and trains to Melton.
