Menzies Aviation has launched a proof-of-concept trial of AI-powered cargo measurement and build-up technology for its cargo operations at London Heathrow Airport.

The trial is being carried out in partnership with computer vision specialist CIND and will assess how automated measurement, real-time cargo visibility and build-up checks can support data quality, operational efficiency and decision-making during the cargo handling process.

As part of the first phase, Menzies is deploying CIND’s Dimensioner In-Motion system, which measures cargo as it moves through the warehouse. The system captures information including pallet dimensions, weight, stackability and shipment references without requiring freight to be stopped or manually handled.

The automated process is designed to provide cargo data earlier in the handling process while reducing manual data entry and the potential for errors. Menzies will assess how this information can support planning and subsequent stages of cargo handling.

The company is also testing CIND’s ContourCheck technology during Unit Load Device (ULD) build-up. The system creates a real-time visual model of cargo as it is loaded onto a ULD and compares it with the approved aircraft contour.

This allows potential contour or overhang issues to be identified during the build-up process, rather than later in the operation. Menzies said the technology could help reduce last-minute adjustments while supporting load accuracy, ULD capacity utilisation and flight safety.

The two systems are being evaluated together to assess their potential impact on warehouse processes and the availability and accuracy of cargo data.

The Heathrow proof of concept will also provide Menzies with operational data to assess whether the technologies could be deployed more widely across its cargo network.

Rory Fidler, Senior Vice President Cargo Technology at Menzies Aviation, said:

Innovation is fundamental to how we are shaping the future of our cargo operations. This proof-of-concept deployment with CIND gives us the opportunity to test how reliable, real‑time data can transform the way we plan, load and manage cargo. The learnings from this pilot will help us assess the potential for wider application across our cargo network, supporting safer operations, smarter use of capacity and better decision‑making.

The trial forms part of Menzies Aviation’s wider focus on digitalisation and the use of technology within its cargo operations.

Marcus Schelin, CEO of CIND said:

Our solutions are proven and established in the market. Partnering with Menzies Aviation is an exciting and important step that reinforces our global rollout and our position as a market leader in automated measurement solutions for air cargo. This first phase deployment allows us to demonstrate real operational value while supporting safer, more efficient, and data-driven cargo handling.
