Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) has confirmed plans to build a new terminal to help meet the growing passenger demand.
The new terminal is part of Sky Harbor’s long-range Comprehensive Asset Management Plan, which was first presented in 2019.
This plan was updated in 2022 to address immediate priorities. Projects included a north/south taxiway on the west side of the airport, a new north concourse at Terminal 3, and a post-security walkway between Terminals 3 and 4.
These projects are all underway, but the airport is now seeking additional capacity due to the continued increase in passenger numbers.
Mayor Kate Gallego said:Phoenix Sky Harbor is busier than ever, which is why we’ll soon need a new terminal to accommodate our growth. To continue providing excellent customer experience at America’s Friendliest Airport, the Council and I are moving forward with plans to build a cutting-edge terminal at the airport’s west end. The new expansion is years in the making and I am looking forward to the continued work to turn our shared vision into reality.
The new terminal will be built on the west side of the airport near the former Terminals 1 and 2. Both of these terminals have been demolished following the closure of Terminal 1 in 1990 and Terminal 2 in 2020.
This latest project will be the first new terminal construction at PHX since Terminal 4 opened in 1990.
Details of the terminal design are still in the works. As planning and environmental preparation will take several years, construction is not expected to begin until after 2030.
Vice Mayor Debra Stark said:I am excited to see what the future will bring for Sky Harbor. As we look toward the construction of the new West Terminal, I will be focused on the things that already make our airport one of the best – it’s strong partnerships with our airlines, its accessibility for people with disabilities and its excellent local and national restaurants and stores. This investment allows us to take those strengths and build on them in the years ahead.
