In November 2019, Portland International Airport (PDX) demolished Concourse A, which has now been replaced with a redeveloped area that is bigger, brighter, and bolder.
The new concourse includes 6,900 square feet of south-facing floor-to-ceiling windows, which provide unparalleled views of the airfield as well as welcome natural light.
Curtis Robinhold, executive director of the Port of Portland, said:For those of you who remember dark, cramped Concourse A, you’re in for a treat in this new space that serves important regional flights. Concourse B will provide a quintessential Pacific Northwest welcome and an experience with food and art that passengers and employees of Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air deserve.
The design features plants and wood panelling, as well as art installations by RYAN! Feddersen, an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. RYAN! Feddersen has created three landscape portraits that symbolise different biomes.
The white oak surrounding the art windows come from sustainably managed forests within 60 miles of Salem, Oregon.
Lulani Arquette, president and CEO of the Native Arts and Cultures Foundation, said:The inclusion of RYAN! Feddersen’s work as part of the airport’s permanent art collection at Concourse B is truly transformational! I hope that 'Inhabitance' helps illuminate her voice in a myriad of ways, and causes travellers to respect and celebrate this place, the lands, and its Native peoples.
The concourse offers more than 500 comfy seats for passengers and more than 300 places in the gate areas to charge mobile devices.
In Spring 2022, Screen Door Restaurants, which Portlanders love for its chicken and waffles, will open in Concourse B, alongside Good Coffee, which offers coffee beans from farmers around the world with breakfast sandwiches, cookies, and pastries that highlight local fruit.
The opening of Concourse B is part of several projects intended to upgrade Portland International Airport. This latest update follows the opening of a new rental car centre at PDX earlier this year.
