The Bird Collision Avoidance System (BCAS) combines efforts of specialists in various fields like: neuroscience, biology, applied engineering, physics and software development.
An extensive R&D process led to the creation of the BCAS system, resolving bird and bat – related problems in a wide area of applications.

Bird Detection and Deterrence Systems
Detection functions are performed by thermal and daylight stereo cameras, constantly scanning the environment for incoming flying objects.
Once an object is detected, the data is analysed by a proprietary software. When the system recognises the flying object as a bird, it positions the acoustic module, which emits a proprietary sound signal. Thus, Acoustic Startle Reflex (ASR) is evoked and the bird changes its course, flying away.
This unique deflection approach causes no harassment and the avian species cannot get accustomed to the signal. The proof has come after extensive testing and research in cooperation with The University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna, Austria and WWF Bulgaria.
After the initial deployment of the system, it operates autonomously, providing real-time remote data monitoring. The database can be accessed for video, data and information retrieval. The collected data can be used for detailed analysis and reporting purposes.
Volacom’s proprietary software is a modular web-based application, providing access to all functions of the system. It allows quick storage and data retrieval for millions of records.
Volacom’s Bird Collision Avoidance System technology is a result of more than a decade-long research and development, which has recently been awarded a patent in the USA (US 8,598,998 B2/Dec.3, 2013 ).
Airplane Bird Strikes
Thousands of airplane bird strikes occur each year mostly in close proximity to the runways. In 2013, for example, there have been more than 6000 reported cases at airports in the US alone. Furthermore, the statistics show a rough increase of 25% since 2012.
In response to the problem, Volacom has developed the Bird Collision Avoidance System (BCAS). It creates a “safety tunnel” along the runway, including take-off and landing flight paths. The system is fully automatic and thoroughly compliant with ICAO and airport requirements. Test, performed by an independent entity has confirmed a 95+ % efficiency of the Bird Collision Avoidance System at an airport environment (automated detection and deterrence).
Volacom offers customised solutions to airports and airbases, adapting the technology (hardware and software) on a case-specific basis in order to assure the cost efficiency, while guaranteeing the highest standards of protection.
