SYSTRA has celebrated the inauguration of the passenger departure facilities at the renovated and expanded Terminal 2 (T2) of Hong Kong International Airport (HKG).

Closed for several years to allow for modernisation, expansion, and redevelopment works, the terminal is now gradually reopening in its new configuration – a redevelopment process undertaken with the aid of SYSTRA.

Terminal 2 reached its first milestone in September 2025 with the opening of its new coach station and, and since May 27 2026, its departure facilities have begun welcoming passengers from several airlines.

Passengers are now instructed to complete all main stages of the departure process at T2 before travelling to boarding gates located in Terminal 1 via the Automated People Mover, the airport’s automated transit system.

In time; T2 will include a boarding hall, enabling it to handle both departures and arrivals directly.

For its part, SYSTRA supported Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) in organising passenger flows for the newly redesigned terminal, drawing on its experience in both traffic engineering and transport planning in order to design smooth passenger journeys.

The company’s work covered the design of landside arrival and departure facilities, the assessment of coach parking requirements, the organisation of vehicle circulation, and the sizing of passenger facilities and equipment.

Access to T2 is facilitated by a series of different public transport options, including the Airport Express, buses and taxis. It is also accessible via a covered footbridge, which directly connects it to a six-level car park with over 1,000 spaces.

T2 aims to strengthen connections to the Greater Bay Area (GBA), a region comprising 11 major cities: Hong Kong, Macao, and 9 cities in Guangdong Province. Its new coach station features a fully covered area with 41 bays for coaches, limousines, crew shuttles, and cross-boundary services, as well as ticketing counters and a dedicated boarding area, enabling the airport to connect to more than 110 destinations across the GBA.

Francis Sootoo, Vice-President Consulting Business, SYSTRA Asia, said:

As the works on Terminal 2 continue, SYSTRA remains committed to supporting AAHK in achieving its goals.

All of our dedicated teams share an immense pride in ushering in this new era for Hong Kong and its airport.
