Changi Airports International (CAI) has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Sun Group to support the development of Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC).

The companies aim to transform the site into Vietnam’s first “airport destination” that integrates aviation infrastructure with tourism, retail, and entertainment offerings.

Under the agreement, CAI will provide advisory services to enhance airport operations, commercial programmes, air connectivity, and service standards. The partnership is intended to position Phu Quoc as an emerging aviation and tourism hub in the Asia-Pacific region ahead of the APEC 2027 Summit.

The airport’s operating capacity is projected to reach 24 million passengers per year, with potential expansion to 50 million in the long term.

Phu Quoc International Airport handled approximately six million passengers in 2025 and has experienced rapid growth in recent years, particularly during peak travel periods. The Government-approved master plan includes a new runway and Terminal 2, which are expected to support broader regional aviation and economic development.

Through the collaboration, CAI will work with Sun Group to manage the airport according to international standards. The initiative will focus on combining airport management expertise with destination development experience.

Mr Dang Minh Truong, Chairman of Sun Group, said:

Airports today play a far greater role than transportation infrastructure. They are gateways that shape the first impression of a destination. Singapore Changi Airport is widely recognised for its operational excellence and pioneering airport destination concept. Through this partnership with Changi Airports International, we aim to develop Phu Quoc International Airport into a true ‘airport destination’ where the travel experience begins the moment visitors arrive.

Sun Group has developed integrated tourism, resort, and entertainment projects across Vietnam, while CAI is recognised for airport operations and management, notably at Singapore Changi Airport.

By bringing together their respective expertise, the partnership aims to create a travel destination at Phu Quoc where the airport experience is integrated with tourism offerings.

Mr Eugene Gan, Chief Executive Officer of CAI said:

We are impressed by Sun Group’s vision for developing Phu Quoc as the next upcoming travel destination. Its integrated tourism and entertainment eco-system provides a strong foundation for the long-term development of Phu Quoc International Airport as a key gateway for the island. We look forward to contributing our expertise to enable Sun Group to create a world-class airport experience.

The partnership is also expected to support Sun Group’s future airport projects in Phan Thiet, Con Dao, and Rach Gia.
