Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX), in partnership with Waymo, has become the first airport globally to offer autonomous transportation to a select number of people to and from the airport.

From 2 November, Waymo is offering members of its confidential research programme, Trusted Tester, the ability to take autonomous rides between downtown Phoenix and PHX airport.

Rides are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week in Waymo’s fully electric Jaguar I-PACE equipped with the fifth-generation Waymo Driver.

Currently, an autonomous specialist will remain present in the vehicle, but the plan for the future is for the safety driver to be removed and for the rides to be made available to the general public.

Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said:

Phoenix leads the nation in demonstrating autonomous vehicle technology, science, and safety. The future of travel is here, and Waymo One service to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport marks our city’s commitment to innovation and technological advancements that will impact the world.

This new service comes two years after Waymo launched its Level 4 autonomous commercial ride-hailing service, Waymo One in the East Valley of Phoenix.

Fully autonomous driving is Level 5.
