The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has provided an update on current expansion works at AS Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD).

The meeting also saw discussion on more details related to Aena’s latest proposal for the 2027-2031 Airport Operations Development Plan (DORA), which would see the group invest 4.48 billion EUR in airports across the city.

Updates were provided during a recent meeting of the Madrid Airport Coordination Committee, which brings together representatives from the Ministry and key institutional, economic, and social stakeholders in Madrid to align positions and address the challenges of infrastructure that is crucial for the region.

Work on MAD’s expansion, which is currently underway, is not set to reach the most significant portion of construction until 2027-2031. These include the main expansion works on both terminal buildings T4 and T4S; construction of a new processing building; and the renovation of the T1, T2, and T3 departure area.

The overall expansion plan will also see preparation of nearby infrastructure for the arrival of a new high-speed rail and metro lines, both of which aim to introduce intermodality. Improvements will also be made to roads, parking areas and platforms associated with each terminal in order to enhance accessibility, capacity and traffic flow, with plans also set to see work carried out to upgrade aprons surrounding terminals.

Elsewhere, Madrid-Cuatro Vientos Airport is set to receive investments into both its airfield and apron area, as well as to facilitate support for sustainability initiatives and communication system upgrades.

The meeting also called into question fare incentives for airlines, which were established by Aena. These incentives will extend to those opening new routes until March 2027, and aim to stimulate growth on routes to Asia when compared to the equivalent period in 2025. The scheme offers a 100% refund of passenger fare proportionate to the airline’s passengers that contribute to the route’s growth, with Aena also stating it will maintain specific incentives for air cargo operations.

Finally, Aena presented its proposed Airport Regulation Document (DORA) to the Airport Coordination Committee, which stipulate that, before the final approval of each five-year cycle, Aena’s proposal must be presented to the Airport Coordination Committees of each autonomous community.
