Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport’s Terminal 2 in Guwahati, India, has been recognised by the Prix Versailles as one of the “World’s Most Beautiful Airports,” highlighting its architecture, cultural integration and environmental design.
The terminal, which serves as a gateway to Northeast India, was selected for its distinctive approach to reflecting the region’s natural landscapes, cultural heritage and biodiversity within a contemporary airport environment.

Designed by architect Nuru Karim, the building draws inspiration from the bamboo orchid, a plant native to the region and a symbol of its rich ecological diversity. The terminal’s vaulted ceilings create large open spaces while referencing the sacred landscapes and indigenous architectural traditions of Assam.
Throughout the building, fluid ceiling patterns echo the flow of the Brahmaputra River and its tributaries, helping guide passengers through the terminal’s various spaces. The design aims to provide intuitive wayfinding while maintaining a strong connection to the surrounding environment.
Local culture also plays a central role in the passenger experience. Indigenous artwork, tribal stories and traditional craftsmanship have been incorporated into the interiors, transforming waiting areas and circulation spaces into opportunities for cultural engagement.
According to the Prix Versailles, these elements are integrated into the architecture rather than serving as decorative additions, making cultural expression a fundamental part of the terminal’s identity.
Sustainability features are also embedded within the design. The use of bamboo, passive daylighting strategies and biophilic design principles seeks to reduce environmental impact while strengthening the connection between the built environment and the natural world.
Other airports included on the 2026 Prix Versailles list are Terminal 3 at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport in China, Terminal 3 at Frankfurt Airport in Germany, Pittsburgh International Airport in the US, Terminal 1 at Navi Mumbai International Airport in India, Techo International Airport in Cambodia and Terminal 1 at San Diego International Airport in the US.
