Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) has completed the latest phase of its security screening upgrades, with all lanes in Control Area 1 of Terminal 1 now operational.
Four newly installed lanes were brought into service on Wednesday, earlier than originally planned.
With this step, 24 security lanes across the airport are now equipped with computed tomography (CT) scanners. Passengers using these areas do not need to remove electronic devices or liquids from their hand luggage.

The airport operator, Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH (FBB), began introducing the technology in 2024. Control Area 5 in the South Pavilion of Terminal 1 was completed in April, and all eight lanes in Terminal 2 have been in use since the start of 2024. The first lanes in Control Area 1 entered service at the beginning of the summer holidays, and all eight are now fully operational several months earlier than originally scheduled.
Aletta von Massenbach, Chief Executive Officer of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH said:I am very pleased that we were able to complete the entire renovation of the security lines in the northern area of Terminal 1 ahead of schedule. The past few weeks of the holidays have shown that the investment and effort involved in the renovation have been worthwhile. The vast majority of travellers were able to pass through security controls with waiting times of less than ten minutes, and thus enjoy a stress-free start to their holidays.
All upgraded lanes are fitted with CT scanners supplied by Smiths Detection. The systems are designed to handle larger volumes of liquids, although some lanes are still awaiting a software update. Until this is completed, FBB continues to advise passengers to follow the standard restrictions on liquids in hand luggage, with individual containers of no more than 100 millilitres, and a total volume not exceeding one litre.
Conventional X-ray scanners remain in operation at 18 lanes in the central hall of Terminal 1. FBB has confirmed that planning is underway for renovations in this main area.
The airport recommends that passengers use terminal monitors, the BER website, or the BER app to check current waiting times and choose the most suitable security checkpoint. All boarding gates can be reached from any checkpoint.
In addition, travellers can continue to use the free BER Runway or BER Biometrics services to book a timed slot for security access. However, lanes allocated to BER Runway in Control Area 4 still use conventional X-ray equipment, requiring passengers to remove liquids and electronic devices.
