Flughafengesellschaft Berlin Brandenburg has launched biometric passnenger processing services at Berlin Airport (BER).
The deployment of BER Biometrics allows passengers to use contactless facial recognition technology, rather than showing a boarding pass.
This contactless experience is active at various stations across Terminal 1 and can be used to print baggage labels, use BER Runway and access the BER Tegel Lounge.
This launch follows a two-week test phase with a limited group of people.
Thomas Hoff Andersson, Managing Director Operations at Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH said:BER Biometrics is a free service for interested passengers and is entirely voluntary. The digital service enables them to plan and organise their stay at the airport more effectively. Thanks to contactless access to various process locations, users can reach their departure gate more conveniently and quickly. For the airport company, BER Biometrics is another building block towards a smart airport of the future.
To use BER Biometrics, passengers must register on the SmartDepart app and provide a selfie.
A live image of the passenger is then taken on-site at the terminal’s designated stations. This image is matched against the SmartDepart record.
BER Biometrics is a voluntary and free service for passengers aged 16 and over.
