Following several months of renovation; Cologne Bonn Airport has announced the official opening of its fully modernised security checkpoint.
Travellers now have access to a set of eleven security lanes equipped with modern CT technology, rendering Cologne/Bonn the first major airport in Germany to be fully equipped with the technology.

Valued at approximately 25 million EUR, the redesign forms a central component of the airport’s ‘Next Chapter’ modernisation programme, through which the airport’s terminals are being modernised over time.
Thilo Schmid, CEO of Flughafen Köln/Bonn GmbH, said:Today’s opening is an important milestone for the future of our airport.
Our new security checkpoint is among the most modern facilities in Europe. It combines the highest security standards with significantly greater convenience for our passengers while also strengthening our airport’s competitiveness. This investment is a clear commitment to growth, quality, and customer satisfaction.
With the installation of the new CT scanners, travellers will no longer be required to remove electronic devices and liquids from their carry-on luggage, with the limit for carrying liquids having now been raised to two litres per container.
The new system also aims to enable faster processing, with the technical modernisation complemented by new lighting and sound design, a new wayfinding system, and a specially designed family lane – known as the ‘Kids Lane’ – which allows children to place luggage on the conveyor belt and remove it by themselves.
Teresa De Bellis-Olinger, Mayor of Cologne said:With this renovation, Cologne/Bonn Airport is setting new standards nationwide and underscoring its role as a modern leader in innovation.
For the city of Cologne and the entire region, the new security checkpoint is a true milestone that will strengthen our position as a hub for business and tourism in the long term.
As the largest shareholder, we are proud that Cologne/Bonn Airport is consistently investing in the future here, securing important jobs, and making travel significantly less stressful for citizens starting today.
