Frankfurt Airport’s Terminal 3 in Germany has been recognised by the Prix Versailles as one of the “World’s Most Beautiful Airports,” acknowledging its architectural design, passenger-focused layout and adaptable approach to future airport operations.

The new terminal, located at one of Europe’s busiest aviation hubs, combines large-scale infrastructure with an environment designed to feel intuitive, welcoming and connected to the passenger experience.

Designed by architect Christoph Mäckler, Terminal 3 forms part of one of Europe’s largest airport expansion projects, occupying approximately 1.3 square kilometres. The terminal was conceived as a vibrant urban environment that mirrors the organisation of a city.

Its piers, boarding gates and passenger lounges are arranged to resemble streets and public squares, helping travellers navigate the terminal through a familiar spatial layout while encouraging movement and interaction.

The architecture combines natural materials, including Jura limestone and travertine, with expansive glazed façades that allow daylight to fill the interior. This creates bright, open spaces intended to provide a calm atmosphere while reducing reliance on artificial lighting.

A key feature of the terminal is a series of three suspended ring-shaped sculptures made from coloured aluminium discs. As the discs rotate continuously, the installations create changing visual patterns that alter passengers’ perception of the surrounding space throughout the day.

According to the Prix Versailles, Terminal 3 successfully balances technical performance with architectural quality, creating a passenger environment that integrates operational efficiency with welcoming public spaces.

The project was also designed with long-term adaptability in mind. Many elements of the terminal can be modified as operational requirements evolve, reflecting a modular approach intended to support future growth while contributing to the terminal’s sustainability.

Other airports included on the 2026 Prix Versailles list are Terminal 2 at Guwahati International Airport in India, Terminal 3 at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport in China, Pittsburgh International Airport in the US, Terminal 1 at Navi Mumbai International Airport in India, Techo International Airport in Cambodia and Terminal 1 at San Diego International Airport in the US.
