Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) has celebrated the opening of its new Central Search Zone, which will provide passengers with three extra-long security lanes, a capacity increase that is intended to transform how the airport welcomes customers through security.

A further two extra-long lanes are scheduled to come into operation by the end of the year, doubling the airport’s current screening capacity and representing the next major milestone in its LBA:REGEN programme.

The new facility features dynamic virtual queue management, which aims to allow the LBA team to actively manage passenger flow and reduce waiting times during busy periods, as well as six eGates for boarding card scanning, helping passengers move into the security search area.

New, dedicated routes have also been introduced for both Passengers Requiring Assistance (PRM) and Fast Track customers in a bid to offer those travelling a more bespoke journey throughout the building.

Each of the new extra-long individual security lanes is capable of processing up to 600 passengers per hour – an increase on the previously possible 350. The lanes represent a significant increase in throughput capability and will aim to help reduce queues, improve operational resilience and provide a more comfortable experience for travellers.

The new Zone is equipped with Leidos next-generation screening equipment, as well as Rhode & Schwarz body scanners which allow passengers to leave both electronics and liquids under 100ml in their bags. Elsewhere, the airport has installed new escalators leading directly to its newly-expanded first in flow World Duty Free store.

Vincent Hodder, CEO at Leeds Bradford Airport, said:

The opening of our new Central Search Zone is a landmark moment for Leeds Bradford Airport and a major milestone in the delivery of our LBA:REGEN programme.

This is a truly transformational investment that will significantly enhance the passenger experience. Not only are we increasing capacity, but we're introducing some of the most advanced security processing technology available at any UK regional airport.

The new facility is outstanding in its field. By doubling our current security capacity, introducing dynamic queue management and increasing throughput from around 350 passengers per hour to up to 600 passengers per hour on a single lane, we're creating a more efficient, more comfortable journey for our customers.

Most importantly, passengers will spend less time queuing and more time enjoying our terminal facilities before departure. The new environment is lighter, brighter, more intuitive and designed around the needs of today's travellers.
