Hamad International Airport (DOH) and Qatar Airways have launched a new biometric passenger processing system designed to reduce the need for physical travel documents during departures.

Developed in partnership with SITA, the Fast Pass service uses facial recognition technology to enable passengers to move through key airport processes with fewer document checks. The rollout connects more than 700 biometric-enabled touchpoints, making it one of the largest implementations of its kind.

Passengers can enrol in the service either at self-service check-in kiosks at the airport or through the Qatar Airways mobile application. Once registered, they can use facial recognition to access dedicated biometric lanes at check-in, bag drop, security screening and boarding, with their face acting as their boarding credential.

The process is intended to reduce waiting times, particularly during periods of high passenger demand. Use of the system is voluntary, with conventional document-based processing remaining available and airport staff on hand to assist travellers.

The introduction of Fast Pass forms part of the airport’s wider Innovation Roadmap, which focuses on digitalising passenger services and improving operational efficiency.

The airport said the biometric platform will continue to be expanded to additional touchpoints and is expected to be made available to other airlines operating from Hamad International Airport in the future.

The launch comes as airlines and airports continue to increase the use of biometric technologies. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), passenger demand for biometric identification has grown, with many travellers expressing a preference for using facial recognition in place of physical travel documents during their airport journey.
