Brussels Airport (BRU) has announced a significant upgrade project for its baggage handling system to improve efficiency, capacity, and ergonomics.

Following recent upgrades to meet the latest baggage security screening standards, the airport will now focus on renewing its baggage sorting systems, loading zones, and storage areas.

The upgrades will streamline operations and make the workplace more ergonomic for baggage handlers through the introduction of semi-automated loading systems and lifting aids.

Currently, the baggage system at Brussels Airport processes over 40,000 pieces of luggage daily across a network of more than 20 kilometres of conveyor belts. The system also includes various screening devices that require ongoing maintenance.

The newly announced investment will target the baggage sorting system, incorporating early baggage storage, container logistics, and loading infrastructure, all supported by a new IT system to maintain high performance in baggage delivery.

The project will install eight new automatic and semi-automatic loading areas, which will improve the flow and processing of baggage.

What’s more, early baggage storage capacity will be expanded to handle 3,000 pieces, in addition to the 1,200 already accommodated. The container storage system will also be upgraded to a modular system that can adjust according to demand.

These improvements will increase capacity and reduce the physical strain on baggage handlers, thus making the role more appealing.

Brussels Airport has launched the tender for the new system, with the first modules scheduled to be operational by 2026. The full implementation of the upgraded system is set for completion by 2028.
