Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) has broken ground on its fourth parallel runway as part of its Destination CLT portfolio.

This construction project was identified in the airport’s 2016 Master Plan Update to address future capacity demands and enhance operational efficiency.

The new runway is scheduled to be commissioned in autumn 2027. It will then allow for 20 additional arrivals and departures during peak hours, with this number rising to 32 in 2033.

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles said:

This is a special day for the City of Charlotte as we break ground on a new runway at our growing Airport. As one of the busiest airports in the world, CLT is a top economic driver for the State of North Carolina and this new runway will increase our operational productivity enabling additional flights while reducing our carbon footprint.

The 1 billion USD airfield project will include the construction of a 10,000-foot-long, 150-foot-wide runway west of Runway 18C/36C. This new facility will primarily be used for departing traffic.

In addition, it will include north and south end-around taxiways to enable aircraft arriving on the existing western parallel runway to continue moving around the new runway. This will reduce aircraft operating times, fuel burn and emissions while eliminating long wait times for aircraft to get to their gates.

American’s Chief Operating Officer David Seymour said:

American Airlines is proud to continue investing in Charlotte through the airport’s Destination CLT programme. This new runway will lead to an increase in capacity to meet future demand. Growth in Charlotte is good for everyone who relies on this airport including American, the customers we serve and our team members.

CLT has been delivering its 3.1 billion USD Destination CLT portfolio since 2015. Additional projects include the airport’s Concourse A Expansion and its Terminal Lobby Expansion.
