Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA) has announced investment in a brand-new, multi-million GBP radar system to underpin the airport’s future operational efforts.

The radar system will be supplied and installed in 2027 by Raytheon UK, and is anticipated to place DSA at the forefront of aviation technology.

Raytheon, an RTX company, currently supplies Air Traffic Management Systems to customers across 45 countries around the world.

The radar system destined for DSA utilises high resolution systems in order to mitigate potential interference caused by wind farms, and represents a next-generation system as compared to the equipment formerly in use during the airport’s previous operations, reducing the site’s reliability on radars operated by third parties.

Simon Hinchley, Executive Director of Airport Operations, said:

The safety of our customers will underpin the operational success of Doncaster Sheffield Airport. Placing this significant order – arguably the most important step in the reopening of this airport to date – speaks volumes about the intent and sense of direction.

During this procurement process, we looked carefully at the market and assessed the operational needs of this airport for the future. RTX is a trusted name in the sector, with a high degree of experience across civilian and military applications, and we very much look forward to working with them over the coming years.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport is currently undergoing an Airspace Change Process, with public consultation due to commence this summer ahead of the introduction of freight flights in 2027 and scheduled passenger flights in 2028.

The airport recently highlighted new developments to its Air Traffic Services team, as well as investment in its ATC facilities and training equipment.
