Doncaster Sheffield Airport has begun the process of appointing an on-site operational partner as preparations continue towards reopening.

The airport has issued a call for a Fixed Base Operator (FBO), inviting aviation-focused businesses to submit proposals for a permanent role supporting general aviation activity. This includes services for private jets, medical aircraft and private pilots.

The selected FBO will work alongside the airport operator, FlyDoncaster, to support the delivery of day-to-day operations across the airfield. The role will form part of a wider operating structure that brings together airfield management, terminal operations, security and ground services.

FBOs typically provide a range of services required for business and private aviation. These include aircraft handling, fuelling and parking, as well as facilities for passengers and crew. Additional services can include hangar space, maintenance coordination and support such as catering and ground transport.

FlyDoncaster’s procurement process is underway and is expected to conclude in May. Aviation businesses interested in participating have been asked to submit proposals by the end of April.

Christian Foster, Director at FlyDoncaster, said:

We’re delighted to take this next step in the journey towards opening Doncaster Sheffield Airport. Our team is committed to delivering a seamless, efficient and premium experience for both passengers and operators, and the partners we work with are vital to the airport’s future success.

The selected FBO will benefit from the strong infrastructure already in place at Doncaster Sheffield Airport, while playing an important role in re‑establishing the airport as a centre for high‑quality aviation services.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport is backed by City of Doncaster Council and the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority. The airport is projected to contribute up to 5 billion GBP to the regional economy by 2050.

Originally operating between 2006 and 2022, the airport handled both long- and short-haul services. Plans for reopening include a terminal capacity of up to four million passengers per year and approximately 40,000 air movements annually.

The airport is intended to serve as a transport hub for both passenger and cargo operations in the region.

Simon Hinchley, Executive Director for Airport Operations at FlyDoncaster said:

As we work towards re-opening Doncaster Sheffield Airport, our focus is firmly on building a safe, efficient and operationally robust airport that is ready to serve a broad range of users from day one.

The Fixed Base Operator will be a critical part of our operational ecosystem - supporting daily airfield activity, maintaining high service standards and helping us deliver a professional and well‑managed operating environment. We are looking for a partner who shares our commitment to operational excellence and who can grow with the airport as activity increases.
