The installation of a suite of state-of-the-art security scanners has now been completed at Edinburgh Airport, enabling passengers to keep both liquids and larger electrical items in their hand luggage.
The project, which has been valued at 24 million GBP, has seen the installation of a set of eight new scanners, adding an additional two lanes to existing infrastructure within the airport’s security hall.

Michael Hering, Head of Security at Edinburgh Airport said:, said:This will be welcome news for the millions of passengers who travel through Edinburgh Airport every year, and we’re glad to be able to complete this project and speed up the process.
We’ve invested almost £24 million to install this cutting-edge technology to improve the overall experience for passengers, and 97% of passengers are already passing through in under 10 minutes.
It’s also important to note that our high safety levels have been maintained and improved on due to the 3D technology, meaning it is a faster, more secure process in time for peak summer.
The new technology utilises equipment supplied by Smiths Detection, and allows passengers to leave liquids in bags when passing through security, provided they are kept in bottles or containers with a capacity of up to 100ml. No limits have been placed on the amount of liquid that can be carried through, so long as each container is under 100ml.
Large electrical items, such as iPads, tablets and laptops are also now able remain in hand luggage thanks to the new 3D screening technology.
